What Is a Merchant?
A merchant — also called an advertiser, brand, or seller — is the business or individual on the paying side of an affiliate marketing relationship. They have a product or service to sell, a performance-based marketing goal (more sales, more sign-ups, more installs), and an affiliate program through which they pay publishers for results they deliver.
The term “merchant” has its roots in traditional commerce — a merchant is simply someone who sells goods or services. In affiliate marketing, the term was adopted early in the industry’s history (when affiliate marketing was closely tied to e-commerce) and remains widely used alongside “advertiser” and “brand.”
In practice, all three terms — merchant, advertiser, and brand — refer to the same party in the affiliate relationship. The choice of term often reflects context:
- Merchant — common in industry documentation, older affiliate marketing literature, and when emphasising the seller’s role in the transaction
- Advertiser — the standard term used on Involve Asia’s platform and in performance marketing more broadly
- Brand — the casual, everyday term used in conversation and content
