During the month of August, the whole state of Malaysia becomes vibrant with Independence Day decorations.
In honour of this celebratory month, streets come alive with lively displays of patriotism, as cars proudly display flags and roads are embellished with colourful decorations and flags.
To commemorate this special month, let us learn a little about the history and unique identities we can learn together.
The History of Malaysia Independence Day
Malaysia’s Independence Day, fondly known as “Hari Merdeka,” holds a special place in the hearts of its people.
On August 31 1957, a historic moment unfolded, witnessing a massive gathering of more than 20,000 people, symbolising the end of British colonial rule in Malaya.
During this momentous day, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, the former Malaysian Prime Minister, declared the independence of the Federation of Malaya.
This year, Malaysia came up with a slogan, Malaysia Madani: Tekad Perpaduan Penuhi Harapan.
The government hopes that by embracing this slogan, Malaysians will be inspired to value every aspect of modernity, including creativity, trust in oneself, respect, and kindness.
Let’s dive deeper to see Malaysia’s uniqueness:
Malaysia has two national days
Malaysia Independence Day celebrated the freedom of the Malay Peninsula and Singapore. After four years, Singapore left the federation because of opposing political interests.
On 16 September 1963, Sabah and Sarawak, collectively known as the Bornean states, joined the Malay Peninsula as one country. Hence, Malaysia was born.
That’s why Malaysia celebrates National Day twice a year, just to celebrate the formation of the nation with the distinction of Independence Day (31 August 1957) and Malaysia Day (16 September 1963), which marks different chapters in Malaysian history.
Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka! was shouted 7 times
For Malaysians, this marks a watershed moment in the Merdeka celebration.
The highlight of this historic celebration was when Tunku Abdul Rahman yelled “Merdeka!” seven times. It was the most memorable moment of this historic celebration.
The relief and emotions that were felt at that moment were indescribable.
People were overjoyed, eager, and brimming with patriotism as they displayed their love for the nation
