Click ID
TL;DR – A Click ID is a unique identifier generated every time a user clicks an affiliate link — it labels that specific click event so that any resulting conversion can be matched back to the exact publisher who sent the traffic. The Click ID is the fundamental unit of attribution in affiliate marketing. Without it, there is no way to know which publisher deserves credit for a conversion — and therefore no basis for paying a commission.
What Is a Click ID?
A Click ID is a unique alphanumeric string — typically 10 to 30 characters — that an affiliate tracking system generates at the precise moment a user clicks a publisher’s affiliate link. It is the digital fingerprint of that specific click event.
Every single click generates its own Click ID. If 1,000 people click the same affiliate link, 1,000 separate Click IDs are created — each one unique, each one tied to that individual click. This granularity is what makes it possible to attribute a specific conversion to the specific click that caused it — even if days pass between the click and the purchase.
The Click ID serves a single critical function: it connects a conversion back to the publisher who drove it. Everything else in affiliate tracking — cookies, postback URLs, pixels, S2S integrations — exists to preserve and transmit the Click ID from the moment of the click to the moment of the conversion.
What a Click ID Contains
A Click ID is not just a random string — it encodes information that allows the tracking system to look up full attribution details when a conversion occurs:
| Information Encoded or Linked | Details |
|---|---|
| Uniqueness | No two Click IDs are ever the same — each click event gets its own identifier |
| Publisher ID | Linked in the database to the publisher who generated the affiliate link |
| Offer ID | Linked to the specific advertiser offer the link belongs to |
| Timestamp | The exact date and time the click occurred |
| Expiry | The Click ID expires in line with the offer’s cookie/attribution window |
| SubID data | Any custom tracking parameters the publisher added to the link |
The Click ID itself does not contain personal information about the user — it contains only attribution data about the click event.
