Click-Through Rate (CTR)
TL;DR – Click-Through Rate (CTR) is the percentage of people who see your affiliate link or promotional content and actually click it. It measures how compelling your content, placement, and call to action are at turning viewers into visitors. A higher CTR means more traffic reaching the advertiser, which means more opportunities to earn a commission.
What Is Click-Through Rate (CTR)?
Click-Through Rate (CTR) is a performance metric that measures the ratio of clicks to impressions — how often people who are exposed to your affiliate link or promotional content choose to click it.
CTR does not measure whether those clicks convert into sales or leads. It measures only the first step: did the person click? What happens after the click is measured by Conversion Rate (CVR). CTR and CVR work together to give a complete picture of how well a campaign is performing — one measures the journey to the click, the other measures the journey from click to commission.
In affiliate marketing, CTR applies across multiple contexts:
- The percentage of blog post readers who click an affiliate link in the content.
- The percentage of email subscribers who click an affiliate link in a newsletter.
- The percentage of social media followers who tap a link in a post or story.
- The percentage of users who click a banner ad on a website.
How Is CTR Calculated?
CTR = (Total Clicks ÷ Total Impressions) × 100
An impression is counted each time your content, link, or banner is seen by a user. A click is counted each time a user clicks the link.
Example:
- A blog post is viewed 4,000 times in one month.
- The affiliate link embedded in the post receives 160 clicks.
- CTR = (160 ÷ 4,000) × 100 = 4%
That means 4 out of every 100 readers clicked the affiliate link.
